Renal artery stenting · Thane

Overview

Evaluation and treatment of narrowed kidney arteries.

Renal artery stenosis is a narrowing of one or both arteries carrying blood to the kidneys. It may contribute to high blood pressure that is hard to control, or to a decline in kidney function.

In selected patients, a stent can be placed through a small puncture to hold the artery open. The decision depends on how severe the narrowing is, how it is affecting you, and what other treatments have achieved.

Careful selection matters. Medicines alone are the right answer for many people, and that is part of an honest evaluation.

Who it’s for

An evaluation may be considered if you have

Hard-to-control blood pressure

Despite taking several medicines as advised.

Sudden worsening of blood pressure

In someone whose pressure was previously well controlled.

Declining kidney function

Particularly after starting certain blood-pressure medicines.

Recurrent unexplained fluid in the lungs

Flash breathlessness along with high blood pressure.

Other vascular disease

Narrowing in the heart or leg arteries is sometimes accompanied by kidney artery narrowing.

A scan showing renal artery narrowing

And you want a specialist view on next steps.

If you have severe chest pain, fainting or difficulty breathing, call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department.

Common questions

On your mind.
Answered.

About renal artery stenting.

It can help in selected patients, but results vary and some people still need medicines. Your doctor can explain what to realistically expect in your case.

Non-invasive imaging such as Doppler ultrasound, CT or MR angiography can usually show this, once your doctor suspects it.

It is performed only in carefully selected patients, because many people with narrowing do well on medical treatment alone.

Ready when you are.

A thoughtful conversation can be the start of better heart health.
